Jason Derulo: Programming Board Success

For those of you who might have missed the stunning success that was the Spring Concert this evening, some of the highlights:

Rather than prove that he has actually produced a song other than the massacre of Imogen Heap that is "Whatcha Say", Jason Derulo chose to demonstrate how truly poor his lip syncing skills are. The mob of 13 girls behind me managed to scream more of his lyrics then he himself did. In addition to this, his dancing skills were put to shame by those of his background dancers, a fact for which he tried to compensate by ripping off his clothes with as much frequency as possible. The only redeeming part of his performance, in fact, was that it finally put an end to the opening act, Telephoned (there is only so much sequin shaking one can take). Coming on the heels of last year's Three 6 Mafia success, it is clear the Programming Board is really hitting it home with their concert lineups.

I thought Jason's performance was entertaining and fairly well choreographed, keeping in mind he just released his debut single "Whatcha Say" only eight months ago. He's twenty years old and has already climbed the music charts and sold over 2 million copies. His first album only came out last month--he's new and still trying to perfect his craft. I think he has a lot of obstacles to overcome. His voice in "Whatcha Say" is clearly auto-tuned, meaning a computer matched the pitch of his voice to the beat. To produce that same effect in concert with just a microphone is nearly impossible. I thought the back-up dancers helped compliment Jason's abilities, rather than putting him to shame. I think Jason was full of energy and has accomplished a remarkable task; he has written, sang and choreographed songs and music videos that millions of people pay for while also throwing together a concert routine and traveling around the country.

Nope, actually his music is total crap.
