Dartmouth Professor Uncensored...

As just about any college student knows by now, posting embarrassing things on Facebook or MySpace can have serious repercussions: taunts and ridicule, lost job opportunities, and even legal action.

However, this lesson has sadly been lost on Religion Professor Reiko Ohnuma. Her Facebook profile is littered with quotes, revealing deep insight into her teaching style:

* "Reiko doesn't know how to explain what 'modernity' is & isn't entirely clear herself."
* "(to a facebook friend) 'I'm now going to shamelessly plagiarize your language.'"
* "Where is Wikipedia when you really need it? The Wikipedia article on modernity SUCKS."
* "Yeah, I saw that page already. Thank fucking God for the Internet."

The next day:
* "Reiko faked it with aplomb."
* "
yeah, but i feel like such a fraud...do you think dartmouth parents would be upset about paying $40,000 a year for their children to go here if they knew that certain professors were looking up stuff on Wikipedia and asking for advice from their Facebook friends on the night before the lecture?"

That's a very good question, Reiko. What do you say, Dartmouth Parents, Students, Alumni, and others?

Give her a break. Her specialty is Buddhism. There is no fucking God.

Can you explain to the over-18 crowd why a professor would post the statement "Reiko doesn't know how to explain what 'modernity' is & isn't entirely clear herself" on her own Facebook page?

@ Anonymous 5:10 PM - College students update their Facebook statuses with similar statements all the time. The "status bar" in one's profile allows users to fill in "[User] is ____" statements; the updated "status", with a timestamp, is then displayed on one's facebook page and in the "News Feed" on the home page of other users who are his/her Facebook friends. The friends can also comment on a status update. As a college student with a facebook, you see a lot of things like "Ashley is WASTEDDD", "Kevin is proud of BS-ing his way through a Russian presentation", "Molly is wondering who's staying in Hanover for thanksgiving?", that kind of thing. You'd think a prof would be a bit more discreet, though.

Anonymous said...

Christine: You have explained why a professor would post a status update. You have not explained why she posted the statement she did. Maybe she never heard the public service commercial that tries to educate young girls to be careful about what they put on their pages... "would you want your father to see you topless?" Ignorance is bliss, until you must deal with consequences; then it is relabeled stupidity.

Anonymous said...

We can assume she thought it was only visible to her friends. Check those settings.

Anonymous said...

A definitely stupid assumption.

@anonymous 5:10 / 7:20 - It looks like you've answered your own question. The answer is gross stupidity.

These posts (Reiko's and Dartlog's) aren't particularly interesting. What she wrote might be mildly embarrassing in becoming public, but nothing more so than what all the rest of the us post on Facebook. I expected something a bit more sensational.

Anyway, it seems to me that with this post, Dartlog is aspiring more towards to the content and style of Ivygate, rather than a respectable political blog...

Michael J. Edgar said...

Anonymous @ 11:38,

We are both a political blog, and a Dartmouth blog. This professor has apparently been teaching introductory Religion courses at the College for 9 years, and is teaching off of Wikipedia, pays no attention to her student's papers, and publicly disrespects her colleagues. Considering our recent issue regarding religion on campus and the importance of religion in a liberal arts education, this story is absolutely relevant.

anonymous5:10 said...

@ 07: I wasn't asking why she would choose to do something like this but whether people really write this way on Facebook. Not being a child, I have never used it and wouldn't expect anything written in the third person to incriminate the subject of the sentence, but apparently that's the way it works. Thanks to Christine for explaining it. Anonymous 7:20 shouldn't ask Christine to justify the mistakes of a professor -- that would be a stupid request.

Saddening, but hardly surprising. I enjoyed classes I took with two of Ms. Ohnuma's colleagues in the Religion Department, and I am sorry those professors must work alongside such a poor excuse for a teacher.

Anonymous said...

given this little gem in her news feed (a comment about someone else's photo): "...we were all wearing our flowing skirts & tye-dye & i think we were BEADING & we had the grateful dead on & the rat was running around..." it would appear that professor reiko used to hang the fuck out back in the day.

Anonymous said...

Professor Ohnuma's Facebook presence, and the notions and ideas represented there, are unconscionable, as well as unprofessional.

And I offer this opinion as a former Dartmouth professor for over eight years; as well as from other Dartmouth-related perspectives.

It is even more appalling that this person has tenure (which I assume she has). It is all well and good (and usual) for a first-term assistant prof to be only a day or so ahead of the students. But, after nine years, one should be a master of the material, looking always for ways to re-invigorate the material, not only for the students, but for oneself.

I always found students, grappling with material for the first time, to be an infinite source of fresh insight; not as the mind-deadening drag which Professor Ohnuma appears to find them.

It would be delightful justice, if all Dartmouth students stopped taking her classes.

Christine S. Tian said...

An item of note, though -- a scan of the online SA course guide shows that Professor Ohnuma does consistently receive decent reviews. Students across the board seemed to appreciate her "clear" and "straightforward" lectures (two adjectives that were thrown around a lot in the course assessment). Certainly some reviews are quite critical (fittingly, some students pointed out that she did not seem overly enthusiastic about the material), but the ratio of bad reviews to good reviews is no higher for Ohnuma than for the average Dartmouth faculty member.

Of course this does not excuse unprofessional behavior, but it is something to keep in mind.

Anonymous said...

I took a class with professor Ohnuma, and she is a clear and concise lecturer. However, what the reviews say is right. She has a definite lack of enthusiasm and is not very responsive in office hours. I'm also a bit shocked that my parents paid hard-earned tuition money for me to take a class based off Wikipedia. At this point in my education, I'm capable of searching Wikipedia on my own.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous 8:25 is "a former Dartmouth professor for over eight years."

After eight years, did he stop being a former professor and become a current professor? Did he not get tenure? Was he teaching English, or does he always use commas like they're going out of style?

He does not seem to have taught philosophy, since his judgment is so bad. Ohnuma's Facebook presence is neither unconscionable nor unprofessional. Many Dartmouth professors have Facebook presences.

Posting the notions and ideas Ohnuma posted was unprofessional, but it was not unconscionable. Many Dartmouth professors express similar notions in private.

"Posting the notions and ideas Ohnuma posted was unprofessional, but it was not unconscionable. Many Dartmouth professors express similar notions in private."

Can you back this up? Many (tenured) Dartmouth professors use wikipedia and ask facebook friends for help, because they don't understand the concepts they are teaching in the introductory class in their department?

Anonymous said...

Similar notions, not identical ones. I cannot back up the assumption that other professors sometimes confess to "faking it" regarding some topic or other to their real friends, in private, away from Facebook. But you know it's true. I wouldn't be surprised if some do it on non-public parts of Facebook too. There are hundreds of professors at Dartmouth, and not all of them know everything all the time.

I wouldn't bother putting Ohnuma in next year's "worst professors" list. Some editor ten years in the future who's a fan of Ohnuma's will just cut it. Or do you do your censoring based on pressure from Parkhurst?

Anonymous said...

To be fair, she is a specialist in Buddhism teaching a very broad Religion 1 class. I wouldn't expect her to be an expert in "modernity" (the concept she consulted Wikipedia on). Consulting other sources for such a lecture is acceptable... using friends/wikipedia as those sources, not so much. (She probably did use other scholarly sources too, though.)

Anonymous said...

Dear Anonymous @ 9:49,

You parse what I wrote too finely, and then proceed to make an unsubstantiated assertion: an inconsistency unworthy of a student of either English or Philosophy. I presume, therefore, you are a defender of Professor Ohnuma. Or perhaps you're simply stirring the pot, to see if it will boil.

I was a tenure-line Dartmouth professor for over eight years, not an adjunct or research professor. I am a former Dartmouth professor. When I left, I was an associate professor. I did not teach English, nor Philosophy.

My usage of commas is a matter of style and choice. You don't like it, that's your choice, or opinion.

Having been a tenure-line professor, I assert my professional judgment on the matter of Professor Ohnuma's has merit. I assert further merit as someone whose student reviews, at tenure time, were stated to be the best the department had seen in over a decade.

I do not quarrel with Professor Ohnuma having a Facebook presence per se. I find the nature of the presence (which is now hidden) to be unconscionable and unprofessional. In my time at Dartmouth, I heard no faculty colleague speak or write with such disdain or disrespect for their students. Not one. If a faculty member is not at Dartmouth to be the best damn teacher possible (on top of being a fine researcher), then he or she should find a research institute as a place of employment.

And, given the high expectations set by Sources: Their Use and Acknowledgment, it is absolutely unconscionable and unprofessional, for any Dartmouth faculty member to use Wiki or any other source (including friends) without proper citation, in a lecture or otherwise. Students are held to severe account for the slightest infraction; faculty must hold themselves to at least that standard.

If 'many' Dartmouth faculty now express opinions similar to those voiced by Professor Ohnuma, then I question deeply the quality of the institution.

But, since I don't believe 'many' Dartmouth faculty share Professor Ohnuma's opinion, I don't question Dartmouth's quality. But, I do question your acceptance of such behavior as hers.

Anonymous 4:32 AM said:

"At this point in my education, I'm capable of searching Wikipedia on my own."

Even if Professor Ohnuma is the exception, are four years at Dartmouth, or anywhere else like it, really worth $180,000?

I suppose it depends on whether it produces a job with a hedge fund.

...Sorry, bad example.

Anonymous said...

A Dartmouth friend of mine, who lives in the NY metro area and has college-age kids, said this: for the first time, members of his community are no longer telling their kids to go wherever they can get in. Price has become an issue for not just the middle class, but even those in the 90-96 percentile of income. FWIW.

Anonymous said...

@anon.1:58: Are you referring to "Sources and Citations at Dartmouth College"?

You write that "it is absolutely unconscionable and unprofessional, for any Dartmouth faculty member to use Wiki or any other source (including friends) without proper citation, in a lecture or otherwise."

This is fairly silly. It's common knowledge that modernity is the general state of being modern while modernism is a conscious affinity for the modern, especially in art. Just because Ohnuma forgot that or never learned it does not mean she needs to cite some friend who told it to her when she mentions it in a lecture.

What I find so bizarre about your comments is your use of the word"unconscionable." What do you mean by it? If Ohnuma relied heavily enough on the friend that she should have cited him in her lecture, her failure would be unprofessional. The way she used Facebook certainly was unprofessional. She would have been careless and made a mistake. But what would raise the citation failure to the level of unconscionability?

Anonymous said...

Dear Anon @ 12:44pm,

So, now you find my statements 'silly' and 'bizarre'.

First, please look up the definition of 'unconscionable'. As I wrote earlier, Professor Ohnuma is the first Dartmouth professor I've heard give voice to thoughts of disdain and disrespect for students (not to mention her co-instructor). In my closely-related professional experience, I find such thoughts to be shocking, excessive, and unreasonable.

Second, I taught difficult intro courses at Dartmouth, too. I cited sources and references. I held myself to a high standard in all my courses for citation and reference. Students are held to the highest standards by the faculty, and are judged against these standards by COS. Leaving aside the issue of the proportionality of some COS judgments (COS frequently institutes overly severe penalties, IMO), everyone (faculty and student alike) knows how high the standards are. Professor Ohnuma's self-expressed behavior does not meet this standard. Were she a student, she would receive a year's suspension or more for her behavior. Yet, as a faculty member, she receives nothing, except tacit and (in your case) explicit rationalization and support. Again, in the context of my experience, I find that unconscionable.

As a tenured faculty member (and therefore an academic leader in her research field, and role model and standard-setter for her students and junior colleagues), Professor Ohnuma is *expected* to express only the highest levels of thought and behavior. It is her responsibility and obligation. If anything is bizarre about this incident, it is that she has not met those expectations, responsibilities, and obligations.

It is not enough to 'bring it' only for the courses you care about. You have to bring it, every day.

To close: When discussing the Honor Principle in the context of my classes, I made clear my expectations. I also observed the person who cheats, or shades the truth, or cuts corners, or doesn't cite help when received, is really in the end only fooling himself or herself. Quality, and the truth, will out.

PS: The name of 'Sources...' has changed over time.

Anonymous said...

Do you really think she would receive a year's suspension or more for not citing the friend who informed her of the distinction between modernism and modernity when she brought up that point in lecture?

"Sources..." does not require citations for common knowledge. Relating another's offhand distinction in lecture is not plagiarism.

Your bizarre fixation on imagined plagiarism is silly. Why didn't you cite any source for your quotation of "bring it"? Why didn't you cite any source for the idea that a faculty member is "expected to express only the highest levels of thought and behavior"? That's not an original thought, either; you got it from someone else. Are you a plagiarist too, or just jealous?

Obviously when your parents told you to "do something you love" that didn't take, and because of it you are hurting Dartmouth Students.

Religion is part of my double major at Dartmouth, and I must say that I am incredibly disappointed in Professor Ohnuma. The Religion department is filled with wonderful, brilliant, and enthusiastic professors who genuinely care about their students and what they teach. Unfortunately, Professor Ohnuma is not one of them. I believe that Ohnuma should have the decency to resign from her post now that she spoke ill of her colleagues. Moreover, she has little respect for her students...there is no reason, then Dartmouth should keep this woman. We are in a financial crisis as it is. Dartmouth shouldn't give a salary to someone who obviously doesn't deserve it. And Professor Ohnuma should issue everyone in the Religion Department, including faculty, staff, majors and minors, as well as all of the students she may have taught, a formal apology.

What i find most appoling is that what this is truley about is a few jernalists trying to get aheah in this rat race. Ohnuma has a sence of humer, she is human. People are not robots, they don't remember everything, dont even trust what your doctor says. And Moderntiy is a confusing subject, anyone who has studied it know's this, and also realises that the more one 'know's' the less they realise they realy 'know'. Life is a grand joke, are we not alowed to laugh at it?

Anonymous said...

It sounded like the Professor was making a joke. She is really only guilty of not understanding Facebook's privacy settings. You see, being the professor and then stating that you need to learn the material on wikipedia is funny because it employs exageration and ridiculousness. Do you really think a 9 year professor (who's probably been teaching since she was a grad student in the 90's) needs to learn "Modernity" for an intro class she has probably taught for years. Is there no humor in Dartmouth?
