Yale Coach Decries Furstenberg Letter

Yale's football coach, Jack Siedlecki, told the Yale Daily News that Dean Furstenberg's letter, far from attacking only the football team, suggests an indictment of athletics in general. He urges potential applicants to use caution before applying to Dartmouth:
"As a parent, it would certainly make me question sending my son or daughter to Dartmouth to be a student athlete," Siedlecki said. "This is one man's opinion, but he happens to be the ultimate decision-maker on admission at Dartmouth. He claims it has not affected his decisions on admitting athletes."

Ivy papers have generally given this issue very thorough coverage, including even commentary from Dartmouth alumni.

Isn't that something like "We at Southwest Airlines urge travelers to use caution when booking on US Airways or United as their financial situation leaves open the possibility that you could be left without means of travel. Just a friendly reminder from the benevolent folks here at Southwest Airlines. By the way, did I mention we compete with US Airways and United for many routes across the US?"

He must be fired, but I'm not holding my breath. Of course every other coach in the Ivy League is going to use this against Dartmouth in recruiting. Between this and the attempt to cut sports programs in the past few years, Dartmouth is making it obvious that sports do not matter.
